I Will Not Agree To Have This Bill [to Repeal Dadt ] Go Forward, Because Our Economy Is In The Tank.

Congress And The American People Have Good Reason To Fear That We Are Heading Toward Another Permanent Garrison Of Americans In A Balkan Country Where Our Mission Is Confused, And Our Exit Strategy A Complete Mystery.

There Is Always An Element Of Realpolitik That Has To Be Present In The Conduct Of Any Nation's National Security Affairs. At The Same Time, We Have To Also Have A Balance Between Realpolitik And Wilsonian Principles Of Freedom And Democracy And Human Rights. And Maintaining That Balance Is The Greatest Challenge That We In The West, Including The Federal Republic Of Germany, Have To Face Because It's Many Times A Very Difficult Decision-making Process.

I Intend To Do What I Can, Working With My Congressional Colleagues, Republicans And Democrats, To Help Bring About The Changes To The Practices And Institutions Of Our Democracy That They Want And Deserve.
